TSM Answered: What to wear to the Christmas Party ?

Emma Asked:

Hi Tien! I have a company wide Christmas party coming up and am looking for a fun informal party outfit that won’t break the bank. Do you have any ideas you could share?Thank you!

T-Styled Me Answered:

Hi Emma – Thanks for your question :) Your Christmas party sounds super fun! My workplace only has a self funded drinks and nibbles night at the local pub planned so not much to get excited about in the dressing up department.

Given the festive season I would suggest something fun with a bit of sparkle and colour whether it be a sequins jacket, a sparkly top, dress, skirt or even a pair of sparkly pumps. Try Asos.com and your city’s high brands as well as vintage stores for more affordable options.

Here’s a little story board I created to give you an idea of what could be fun for a Christmas party. All items are available from Topshop, Zara and French Connection which are all very reasonably priced stores.

I think everyone should own something sparkly in their wardrobe for party season. Sequins, when kept at a minimum can be timeless and they always come back in and out of fashion over time. I have a dress I got from French Connection this year which I wore to my birthday dinner in Melbourne during Winter. It’s a joy to wear but it can be a little heavy so if you’re not up for a dress you can always have fun with a skirt or top for that special night out.

If you have access to All Saints, they always have beautiful sequin dresses and skirts.
Here are some photos I’ve found to inspire you for the Christmas season:

Have a great time at your Christmas party Emma!

T-Styled Me Post Thanksgiving Sales Round Up!

I hope all who celebrate Thanksgiving had a wonderful holiday and although this post is admittedly a little late (but that could prove to be a good thing for the hip pocket!) but I’ve just been a little too busy stocking up on Christmas presents (no, not just for myself :P) with all the crazy sales this weekend. I honestly don’t know the difference between Black Friday Sales and Cyber Monday Sales but I’m definitely not going to complain! TSM Styling Session: Bringing a ray of sunshine into your life – How to wear Yellow

Growing up with an Asian background, I was taught to avoid wearing the colour yellow given my already ‘yellow’ skin but more and more I find myself drawn to wearing these various shades: Gold, earthy creams, brassy olives and warm mustards and I even noticed that my taste in jewellery has slowly shifted from delicate silver pieces to bold statement jewellery and finer gold vintage pieces.

I’ll admit that wearing yellow can be a challenge to coordinate but while I was in Melbourne a few months ago, my friend Poosilla let me style her using the pieces she’d transferred into her new wardrobe (having recently moved into a new apartment with her fiancé) and I was pleasantly surprised to find several yellow based pieces and many brightly coloured items had surpassed the cull. I know a lot of us tend to do this: Summer tops get thrown in the Summer pile and we look at our dark Winter wardrobe and wonder why our clothes are so dull and boring and we now totally ‘have nothing to wear.’ I thought it’d be fun to pull out items which she’d purchased a few seasons back and put an outfit together that was tran-seasonal, fit her bubbly personality and lifestyle and prove that you can wear yellow, even if you have an Asian background and it’s definitely ok to wear investment styled pieces even if it’s not current stock.

As with all my online styling sessions, let’s get get to know a little more about Poosilla:

Poosilla’s Profile Stats

  • Poosilla’s Height:  Approx 5 ft 4” (1.64m)
  • Skin tone: Medium – warm
  • Build: Slim
  • Body shape: Pear/hourglass Refer to this post if you need a reminder
  • General Clothing size: Size Small – Medium  i.e UK/AUS 8-10.
  • Lifestyle: Busy and social – Poosilla works and plays hard but is guaranteed to always be up for Friday night drinks, a boogie on the dance floor and any time is latte time!
  • Shopping preference: Needs basis with the occasional splurge
  • Shopping frequency: Purchases on average every few months.
  • Style Preference: Fun, colourful and open to different styles
  • Personality (in three words): Bubbly, Social and funny (All in my opinion!)

Poosilla’s Styling criteria

  • For this styling session, Poosilla had no criteria and allowed me free ‘artistic’ range – She modelled for me to practice my styling skills and I wanted to play with unusually bold and bright colours in her wardrobe. I wanted to show that you can mix classic timeless pieces with bolder Summer or Winter pieces to obtain different looks from your existing wardrobe to avoid always having shopping for new pieces (as gratifying as that can be!)

T-Styled Me’s Insta Tumblr Round up: Happy snaps from Paris

Why haven’t I posted on my weekend travels to Lyon and Paris last week I hear you ask? Well funny story that – You’ll find it amusing to know that I did bring my camera to France only to realise on the first day that I’d left the memory card at home (still plugged into the SD reader to my laptop, of course). Annoying as that were, I popped into Fmac to buy a new one and managed to take a few photos of dinner on our first night. Second morning, rocked up at the Le Halles de Lyon (Paul Bocuse Food market) only to discover I’d left the camera on the entire night and the battery had died! Massive.Fail. I was so annoyed at myself. You’re probably thinking ‘Well… at least you had your iphone to take photos right?!’ Nope, wrong again. I also managed to leave my phone at home; I only realised upon arrival at the airport. Fail.fail.fail. You’d think after travelling veteran by now and have this packing thing down pat but no, even I continue to surprise myself!

Here are a few pictures I managed to take with my bf’s phone:

Still at awe at how French women stay so slim when such rich and decadent food is always at their disposal …

Dessert at Paul Bocuse’s 3 Michelin starred Restaurant in Lyon

I loved the coloured walls and cobble stone pathways of old town Lyon

Dinner with friends in Paris – We had such a good time catching up and visiting the Parisian Flea markets together :)

I believe the Christmas tree at Galleries Lafayette gets bigger and brigher each year. This is the third consecutive year that I’ve taken this photo x

Last minute decision to go with the blue – Thanks for all your comments and helping me decide :) As my friends have noticed, this is a huge and heavy ring!

The highly coveted Celine Trapeze handbag – I couldn’t stand the ‘side flaps’ initially but I must say it has definitely grown on me (and the fact that you can adjust the bag so they fold inwards).

Dessert and wine were mandatory for each meal … Soooo.good.take.me.back.please!

I think I’ll definitely need to invest in a photo like this one for my future house to remind me of all the fabulous Parisian memories over the years ..

I hope you enjoyed my snaps from the good old iphone and have a great week!

TSM Outfit post: A Heston Dinner Date in Printed Silk Trousers

They say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and I’m inclined to think this certainly is the case with my boyfriend. While I’d prefer to spend discretionary funds on clothes and jewellery, my boyfriend’s preference would be to spend it on trialling different restaurants and dining at Michelin starred restaurants so when our anniversary reared its head a few weeks ago, I knew that the usual photo collages, cufflinks and scrapbooks that worked in previous years wouldn’t really bring that sparkle to his eyes the way that a surprise dining experience at Heston’s second Michelin starred restaurant, Dinner at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel, would so I booked in date night a few months in advance.

We had the fortune of eating at Heston’s 3 Michelin starred restaurant ‘Fat Duck’ earlier in the year and were keen to compare it to ‘Dinner’ ever since it’s highly anticipated opening in 2011. Dinner’s menu is based on Heston’s ‘Feast’ series with each dish on the menu was referenced to a historic time period and was inspired by cooking methods and recipes found from the archives of the British Library.

While the mains missed the wow factor for me (we chose steak and the fish), we both agreed that meat fruit and the tipsy pineapple cake (that I kept incorrectly calling the Tipple cake) were the main stars of the ‘Dinner’ Show:

Looks like a real mandarin doesn’t it? The meat fruit (chicken parfait)’s resemblance to the fruit was extremely impressive and we were equally satisfied with the light, creamy feathery texture once we cut into it and I loved the slightly citric tang from the mandarin jelly exterior with the grilled sourdough toast.

I was advised by a work colleague to order the signature pineapple tipsy cake well in advance (it takes 40 mins to prepare) and to definitely share it with someone because of it’s rich texture. Sharing? Biggest mistake of my night. I loved loved loved the rich cream filled brioche that had be baked and basted in sugar syrup that I really could have easily finished it off by myself. It can only be described as heaven in your mouth sprinkled with just the right amount of sweetness. The side pineapple slice spit roasted to provide a fruity grilled contrast and was the perfect accompaniment to the cake. One of the best desserts I have ever tasted! Continue reading

TSM’s Parisian Lust List: YSL Arty Oval Glass Ring

I’m heading to Lyon for two days and then up to Paris for the weekend to meet friends who are currently holidaying there from Australia and I, for one, cannot wait for this long weekend to begin so I can start indulging in the culinary capital that is Lyon!

As you know I’ve been on a shopping ban, for good reason, for a few weeks now (feels like a lifetime) and I feel that there might be a relapse on the horizon given my terrible weakness and track record previously in Paris. I blame it on the baguettes, beautiful boutiques, sexy accent and all the beautifully dressed women of Paris!

I’ve been eyeing the YSL Arty Oval Gold Plated Glass rings for well over a year now. The biggest reason why I haven’t picked one up yet is because I feel as though every person I know owns one of these and therefore, in my warped mind, the appeal diminishes. Obviously I’m exaggerating and this statement ring is still a designer piece of costume jewellery that not everyone has the luxury to afford but it is definitely a highly recognisable item, especially in the blogisphere and I fear that my ‘jewellery judgement’ has been clouded by the fact that it’s so popular. I just have a weird thing about knowing that I have a good eye for unique jewellery and I don’t want to regret investing in it for the wrong reasons.

The fact that I keep trying them on and debating which colour I would choose at every given opportunity leads me to believe that I actually do have a genuine attraction to the design and aesthetic of these brightly coloured glass rings despite being grossly  saturated in the market. I can see myself having a lot of fun with them and possibly getting addicted to collecting colours!

Coupled with the fact that YSL’s new head Hedi Slimane has shaken things up at YSL by changing the whole direction and look of its designs to more of a Celine-esque black sleek and minimal feel, the new SLP (Saint Laurent Paris) from what I have read is getting rid of the well known colourful and cheery coloured chyc bags, clutches and accessories to make way for more core classic (black) designs with heftier price tags. I’m now more keen then ever to get my hands on one of these statement rings before they too are *poof* gone from the classics collection …

Please help! Which colour should I choose? I’m leaning towards the dark blue or possibly a black? Yay or nay? Do you own one and which colour(s) do you have?

I’ll be away from my blog while I’m on holidays but you can always follow me through FB and add me on instagram: @tstyledme :)

T-Styled Me’s Weekly Insta-Tumblr Round Up!

It’s not often that I can say this but I think I had a near perfect weekend :) My bf planned a surprise weekend getaway for us to York (2 hrs train ride north of London) which turned out to be the perfect medicine for my niggling cold and the perfect way to unwind and de-stress from the crazy that is our lives at the moment. There’s nothing more I like than a good massage and spa day so I was very spoilt to be treated to a 2 hour session at the Cedar hotel & Spa. I can’t remember the last time I had a facial – It must have been two and a half years ago (hmm, is that bad?!) and it was my first time getting body wrap. Has anyone else ever had one of these? I’m sure it has softened and improved my skin but I can’t help but think the best part of the treatment was when I finally had the chance to wash off all the “magical algae” 😛

Here are a few pictures from my weekend away and some of my favourite pics reblogged from my tumblr:

The beautiful town of Yorkshire where we enjoyed Sunday Roast with Yorkshire pudding in a local home styled cafe. While my bf prefers fine dining, I love home-styled casual family run restaurants that have hearty delicious food, comfortable settings and friendly service.

OOTD: Walking around in 1 degrees C in York: Tophsop Supersoft skinnies, Warehouse shirt, Topshop cardigan, Alexa Mulberry and Stuart Weitzman boots that are very warm!

Amen! I love this quote of the day – I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and I highly recommend taking time out of your hectic life to ensure that you have time to savour and enjoy it with those who you love!
