TSM Styling Session: Share your Alexander Wang Diego with your mum!

Um, can somebody please tell me how it’s Easter this weekend already? Because according to me, I just came back from a quick holiday home to Oz in Jan and Easter, well that was meant to be ages away! Now they say that time flies when you’re having fun and I agree to some degree but I believe the more realistic saying is: ‘Time flies when you’re busy’ and a busy bee I’ve been lately indeed! I’ve been holding a few styling and shopping sessions with clients on top of the usual 9-5 and am now in the midst of planning European travel adventures with friends for Summer (Note ‘Summer’ is a mythical concept at this stage as it’s still snowing right now, what the?!).

My good friend Kaz’s brother and his girlfriend have moved to London recently from Melbourne too so it has been lovely having company and helping them transition their lives to this crazy cosmopolitan city that is London like we did those years ago. Chatting with them actually prompted me to post photos from a day where I did a fun little shoot in the ‘burbs with Kaz’s family with the intention of showcasing the fact that styling doesn’t stop once you have kids and get older but stays with you for life and I love the fact that Kaz and her stylish mum share an interest in fashion and get away with sharing clothes, accessories and designer bags.

Kaz and I often text each other lamenting over our shared curse of shopaholicalism and that we have friends who are lucky to have been born sans the shop lusting gene (hmm, apparently they term it self restraint). Kaz and I met years ago working in fashion retail at Saba so it was inevitable that we bonded over clothes, sneaky back room coffees and venting about cray cray customers. Kaz has a fantastic eye for fashion and is a style inspiration herself so when we went shopping this day, we both immediately agreed that this top, albeit from a high street store we hadn’t shopped in for ages, would be the perfect little knit for Autumn. I’d also just picked up this bright fuchsia scarf on sale at Country Road so using her existing wardrobe, I put a little casual, walk your dog and meet friends for brunch outfit together for the post.

T-Styled Me tip: Sometimes the thought of wearing a cropped knit can be a little uncomfortable for fear or emphasising the stomach area but a neat idea to overcome this is to pop a longer collared shirt underneath or a loose, longer tee like I did here with Kaz to create length in the torso and to create a casual layered look that emphasised the split black detailing and to break up the monochrome look, always pop some colour via way of a scarf or statement necklace to draw attention to the face.

I love dropping by Kaz’s place for dinner. Mama Kaz teaches me everything I need to know about Chinese cooking and we often have an after dinner tea, gossip session and discuss the next handbag we’ve got our eye on :) My Balenciaga from here was actually inspired by Mama Kaz’ vintage Balenciaga city that I have drooled over for years.

Although Kaz’s mum is more petite framed compared to Kaz, they can often share tops, shoes and handbags which I think is a great way to expand your own wardrobe if you both have similar tastes. Love these picture below of these gorgeous gals! Thanks for letting me play dress ups with you both :)

T-Styled Me Answered: Black Jeans that don’t fade

Hey Guys! How was your weekend? I spent weekend braving the cold trying out the food at Broadway market in Hackney where I chose to give into my Vietnamese craving for some ‘Banh Mi Thit’ (a traditional Vietnamese crunchy bread roll filled with pickled veggies and grilled meat of your choice). If you’re Vietnamese like me or live in Melbourne, you’ve no doubt had one these from the Western or Eastern suburbs and if you’re as old as me, can probably reminisce about the days when we called the rolls ‘Two dollar bread.’ They’re about four dollars now (I gobbled down as many as I could when I was back in Melbourne) and in London, they’re a rip off at £5 and sadly, no where near as good.

Anyway, I seem to always digress … I’ve received a few questions through my blog/tumblr so wanted to share the answers with you guys:

Hi Tien… as a fellow Aussie gal, I really enjoy reading your posts and I love your sense of style. My question is actually really simple… Can you recommend a good brand for a pair of black skinny jeans that doesn’t fade! I am looking for something skinny (though not super skinny), comfy, doesn’t break the bank, is jet black and stays jet black! Thanks x

T-Styled Me Answered:

Hiya! Aww thanks, I’m glad you’re enjoying my posts :) I always imagine only a few of my friends reading my blog so it’s lovely to hear from readers! You know what, I actually don’t own a pair of ‘real’ black denim jeans – I have every other variation known to man (jeggings, supersoft skinny jeans etc) and I haven’t tried many jeans back in Australia for while to recommend to you however…

From personal experience, I’ve found Saba jeans the best quality for a reasonable price (approx $129) that fit my shape (I prefer high rise compared to mid rise) are comfortable and have kept their shape for years. I currently live in these Saba jeans (termed jeggings but have enough structure to be considered jeans). I have heard that Saba have had bad batches of these jeans so as a warning just to be on the safe side, speak to the staff to see if there have been any issues (I bought mine 8 months ago and didn’t experience any but just in case they’ve changed dyes recently). These are the ones I’m wearing below:

TSM: B is for Balenciaga

Actually, B is for Bad. That’s the guilt talking – I made a rather lavish handbag purchase a few weekends ago when Harrods had their storewide 10% off weekend and I’m still feeling guilty. My friend and I started with good intentions: Meet up on Saturday morning. Check. Grab coffee. Check. Grab cosmetics with the discount. Check. Buy a Balenciaga bag each … errr what?! How did that happen?

Now, I’m not an impulse buyer when it comes to major designer goods. I most likely have a picture in my head or pinned on my wall at least a year prior to purchase and in my defense, I have been on the lookout for my perfect Balenciaga for a while now. You know, visiting the website daily, harassing Balenciaga boutique staff, accumulating half a dozen quote cards only to pretend I still need ‘my other half’s opinion’ before sneakily taking pictures on my phone as though I’m making copies for the black market and embarrassingly rushing – These have become routine weekend activities for me. I even scoured Ebay on a daily basis for months, hoping in vain that my Balenciaga bag would magically appear heavily discounted and BNWT (brand new without tags). It.just.never.happened. What else was I meant to do?

If you own a Balenciaga or are a fan, did you, like me, find there so many decisions to make about one bag? Velo vs. City. Rose gold hardware vs. regular hardware, Black vs. anthracite … the list continues! Luckily I knew the colour of the bag from the beginning. My friend’s mum has a gorgeous tanned coloured Balenciaga and I too have wanted one in a similar hue since circa 2006 when they last released that swatch and I decided the ‘city’ perfectly fit usual handbag contents and my DSLR and as much as I love rose gold now, long term, I wanted the colour of my Balenciaga to fade and I felt the classic hardware would complement the aged look (told you, I’d given this way too much prior thought).

Ok, enough writing … Here are some pictures taken on the weekend with my new lover: Balency :)

The first night I had my Balenciaga, I literally cuddled it in bed. My bf, rightly so, was convinced I was bonkers for a) spending so much money on a ‘boring’ bag and b) seeing me at a new low – sleeping with a designer handbag. It’s kind of a running joke now. If he annoys or upsets me, he runs into the room, looks for the Balency and shows me because he knows it’ll make me smile. I can’t help but laugh at him and the fact that it actually works!

Outfit Details

After this splurge and in attempt to curb spending, I’m now officially on a shopping ban (damn you Shopbop discount code – you got me good) with the caveat that I can still spend on travel, presents, groceries, food and goodies from markets. I know some people can’t stand looking through ‘old junk’ and antiques but I could wander for hours through Portabello Antiques market in Notting Hill. I was on the lookout for some antique vintage trays for my future dresser (to display make up and perfume bottles) and ended up with two  Sheffield Silver trays after a good bargaining match …

T-Styled Me’s Weekly Insta-Tumblr Round-up!

I spent the ENTIRE weekend eating and drinking – I kid you not. It started off with burgers and fries on Friday night and it all went downhill from there. Brunch at Borough Market on Saturday (Fish wrap, roast pork roll and carrot cake demolished) was followed by a delicious and filling Turkish dinner at Mem and Laz and cocktails at Wax Jumba (in Angel). Somehow, a box of Cheezels also found its way into my stomach as a late night snack. So today being Sunday, there really was no point in being healthy right? So we stuffed ourselves at Dim Sum (a.ka. Yum Cha or as I like to call it ‘Chinese Tapas’) and just to top off the fact that I couldn’t be bothered cooking, we ordered pizza for Sunday night’s dinner and watched the X Factor UK. A detox is definitely on the cards this week!

Here are my 5 fave pics from my tumblr and instagram (@tstyledme) this week

Reblogged from Tumblr: Love love love the Balenciaga Mules

On the way to Borough Market and dinner that night at Mem & Laz.

On the way to Dim Sum today. T-Styled her bf in Zara trousers, Ted Baker Shirt, Ted Baker knit, Zara Leather Jacket and Paul Smith sneakers 😛

It wasn’t THAT cold today but I definitely felt a chill in the air so I started the Autumn layering process nice and early. Outfit: Topshop jeans and sweater, Saba Jacket, Office Suede Wedges, Mulberry Alexa, House of Harlow necklace and ring and Jago Scarf from the Netherlands.

Hugs from my friends have definitely helped me get through this working week. Work has been manic and it hasn’t been uncommon to eat lunch at 3pm at my desk and rely on coffee to get through the mornings. Take out dinners all week long have been also uncharacteristic for me. I’ve succumbed to the unhealthy stress cycle: Stress, eat badly, feel guilty and low about eating badly and stress some more. If you guys have any tips on how you deal with stress in your life I would love to hear it! My aim this week is try to get back into a eating healthy routine, drink more water and get more sleep.

I hope you all have a lovely and stress free week ahead of you!

TSM Matches Megan Park Scarf with Teacups

Even though you know I love a good cup of coffee, I’m actually habitually more of a tea drinker, leaving coffee as a social treat in attempt to avoid caffeine addiction. I’ll always have a cup of English breakfast Tea in the morning at 10am and in a Twinings’ Camomile, Honey & Vanilla herbal tea in the evenings while I catch up on TV shows and facestalk surf the Internet.

Kaz, who took pics in my last post, is also a massive tea lover. She’s taught me the funniest way to drink tea to avoid teeth staining and while it clearly works for her, I can’t manage drinking like that without spilling my tea everywhere! Looks like I’ll just need to invest in teeth whitening products in the future.

The colours of the tea cups we had at Birdmans Eating the other day matched Kaz’s newly purchased silk scarf so I wanted to quick post to share the pics of the scarf with you  …

The gorgeous print is made from 100% silk with black cotton trimmings all the way around the square-shaped scarf and is full of vibrant blues, reds, greens and … well every colour under the rainbow! It’s from Megan Park (UK designer now based in Australia) who stocks her subtle yet unique accessories and select apparel line in David Jones (Australia)

I was excited about seeing trams again so I did that embarrassing ‘tourist / parent’ thing after breakfast the other day and made poor Kaz pose in the middle of the street about 10 times before I could capture a shot of her and our unique Melbourne trams.

If you own an All Saints leather jackets you’ll know how comfortable and trendy they make you feel. They have a little more attitude than most leather jackets I’ve come across (e.g the post with Gee) and the prices are a lot dearer to match their unique designs and structure. I love the zip detailing on this particular jacket.

T Styled Me’s Debut Post

Can you still remember what your new year’s resolutions were for 2012? Or have they been filed away in the ‘Life’s too busy at the moment so let’s not think about it right now’ part of you? That’s usually where mine end up 51/52 weeks of the year! For 2012, I vowed to stop saying ‘Yeah, I’ll get to that later’ and making excuses for not doing all the things I know I SHOULD and WANT to do (Save for a house, volunteer and support a charity, move back to fashion and be more creative just to list a few …)

I’ve been SO inspired this year by the number of friends and acquaintances, especially females, who have embarked on a journey to explore their creative talents and those who have persevered and successfully started their own businesses. I’ve always been encouraged by friends and colleagues to follow my passion for fashion and work as a stylist, so guys, I’m feeling very shy about this but for me, this a small (BIG to me) yet exciting step away from that procrastinating voice in my head saying ‘Yeahhh maybe one day …’ and exploring this apparent ‘talent’ for Shopping & Styling

And yes, I know I’m probably five years late jumping on the blogging bandwagon at this stage in a market saturated with successful fashion and styling bloggers, but a girl has gotta try right?! So while my vision for T-Styled Me is to showcase my own personal style, I want it to have more of a focus on my ability to style others which I find more challenging because let’s face it, we don’t all look the same. We have different body shapes, weights, sizes, skin tones, preferences and lifestyles and don’t all look great in the same clothes. Have you ever bought something after seeing it look amazing on a friend, celebrity, magazine /manequin or fellow blogger and then be disappointed on how it appeared on you? I have … and I would often wonder why I didn’t measure up to how great they looked and I really disliked that dejected feeling about what I didn’t like about my body and that annoying voice that reminded me about how much money I had just wasted too! What I’ve learnt now is that we should try to dress to flatter our individual body shapes and stay within our budgets and importantly, stop hating on our bodies! So whether you’re a mum of three, a busy CEO, a university student or a fellow fashion enthusiast, I’d love to help dress and customise looks that suit and complement YOU !

I’m super excited to share with you my travels, styling sessions, food adventures and product reviews and I really look forward to hearing your comments and feedback so please talk to me :) Please contact me if you’d like to be featured here too as I want to represent all real and different body shapes and sizes in this blog irrespective of budget and walks of life so stay tuned for more posts to come!

Check out a sneak peek of one of my styling sessions below with V that I’ll be posting at a later date…

Can’t wait to talk you through how much fun I had styling her in my Halston Heritage Faux fur gilet … Keep an eye out for that post !
